What's the Difference Between 'Bring' and 'Take'?

In this blog post we look at when to use bring and when to use take.

'Bring' or 'Take'?

  1. "Bring" and "take" are both verbs that indicate movement, but they are used in different contexts.

"Bring" is used when something or someone is carried or conveyed to the speaker or to the location of the speaker. It implies that the speaker is the destination or the final location for the thing or person being brought.

"Take" is used when something or someone is carried or conveyed away from the speaker or from the location of the speaker. It implies that the speaker is the starting point or the location where the thing or person is being taken from.

Remember, "bring" is used when something or someone is brought towards the speaker or the speaker's location, while "take" is used when something or someone is taken away from the speaker or the speaker's location.

Here are some examples to illustrate the difference:

  • Could you bring me a glass of water? (The speaker is asking for the water to be carried or conveyed to them.)

  • I'll bring the cake to the party. (The speaker is saying that they will carry or convey the cake to the party.)

  • Can you take the garbage out? (The speaker is asking for the garbage to be carried or conveyed away from them.)

  • I'm going to take the dog for a walk. (The speaker is saying that they will carry or convey the dog away from their current location.)
