What's the Difference Between 'Bad Rap' and 'Bad Rep'?

In this blog post we look at when to use bad rap and when to use bad rep.

'Bad Rap' or 'Bad Rep'?

"Bad rap" and "bad rep" are two phrases that refer to a negative reputation or image. Both phrases are often used to describe someone or something that is perceived as having a negative or undeserved reputation.

"Bad rap" is a colloquial phrase that is often used to describe someone or something that has been unfairly criticized or judged. For example:

  • The politician has been getting a bad rap in the media lately.

  • The new product is getting a bad rap even though it hasn't even been released yet.

"Bad rep" is a more informal phrase that is often used to describe someone or something that has a negative reputation. For example:

  • The company has a bad rep for mistreating its employees.

  • The rapper has a bad rep for promoting violence in his music.

Although the term “bad rap” was the original form, it was often mistakenly considered to be a shortened form of the word ‘reputation’.  Over time this form has slowly become accepted in spoken English.

Note: Both "bad rap" and "bad rep" are often used in spoken language, but "bad rep" is less common in written language. It is important to use the appropriate phrase in the right context.
